Southcoast Dreaming

Southcoast Dreaming

The great Aussie road Trip is an adventure held fond in many of our hearts. There is something about the smell of the tent that has been in storage all year, arguing over how to tie a ‘truckies knot’ on the trailer or dropping the dog off at Grandma’s that really sets the mood for hitting the road.

For reasons not known to mankind, we often find ourselves heading north. Maybe we are migratory mammals, forever following the warmer waters and longer days. But heading south is a liberating feeling. There is a sense of space and exploration as you wind down the Princes highway to the South Coast of New South Wales.

The South Coast boasts untouched woodlands and temperate rainforests, breathtaking escarpments and some of the best surf on the east coast. There is a sense of adventure that you don’t find further north, a feeling like a 'secret spot' might be just around the corner - and it usually is.

There is just about something for everyone. Quaint towns dotted with boutique stores and fine restaurants, beautiful beaches and vast expanses of national park for the outdoor lovers.

Pigeon House Mountain is a distinctly shaped peak, with vertical cliffs which are #onpoint. The hike to the summit is a 5km round trip with ladders included to climb the vertical sections. It’s not for the faint hearted, but it’ll keep you and your wallet slim.

If you’re keen for a more leisurely activity, Huskisson and Hyams Beach are a perfect place to catch a few rays. These beaches are famous for their pure white sand which is more reminiscent of snow, or the colour of your skin coming out of that long cold winter.

For a trip to the South Coast, there are very few necessities. The creature comforts are always within reach with Nowra, Ulladulla and Batemans Bay acting as the main regional hubs. There is an abundance of wildlife, so be prepared to get up close and personal with a few friendly neighbours, mostly of the furry, pouched variety.

My only recommendation would be to take a travel buddy to share it with. A wise man once said ‘Happiness is only real when shared’.

Travel safe,
