The Biggest Supermoon in a Century - See it Tonight!

Felicia PohFelicia Poh

Superstitions, celebrations, and all that jazz.

supermoon

What is a supermoon, you might ask? A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.

According to predictions, tonight we will see the biggest and brightest supermoon that we have seen in almost a century!

It'll be the first time since 1948 that the moon will be the closest to Earth, appearing 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the average monthly full moon.

Did you know?

  1. In the United States, it's believed that seeing the moon over the right shoulder brings good luck, whereas seeing the Moon over the left shoulder brings bad luck! Who knew?

  2. It's bad luck to point your finger at the Moon. Ancient Chinese theory states that your ears will start hurting... Don't try.

  3. If you happen to be sick, you might want to avoid looking at a full Moon, because you could be sick for a long time...

Since it's such a momentous event, we thought about some of the other superstitions that people had, and trawled the web to find the weirdest ones for you! Here's what we found:

Superstitions

  1. In China the number four is considered unlucky because it sounds like the word 'death' in Mandarin and Cantonese. If you've been to China, you'd have realised that some buildings refuse to have a fourth floor! Now you know why.

  2. In South Korea, it is believed that running a fan in a closed room while sleeping will kill you. Farfetched, or bizarre? This is why many electric fans in Korea come with auto-shutoff timers.

  3. In Turkey, it's unlucky to chew gum at night, as the Turkish believe that the gum essentially becomes the flesh of dead people after dark... Yikes!

  4. In Wales, making a crown out of hazel sticks and leaves and wearing it can grant you one wish. Sweet!

  5. In Senegal, it's said that you ought to keep travel plans to yourself. If anyone learns about your upcoming vacation or move, it's destined to be ruined... Oh boy, this sure makes me glad I don't live in Senegal.

  6. In Germany, it's said to be bad luck to cheers with water because you are literally wishing death to everyone you are drinking with. Crazy, right? Next time, you'll have a reason to offer your friend a proper drink!

  7. In Sweden, locals are really careful about the manholes they step on, as some are marked withe letter "A" and some with "K". "K" is believed to stand for love, whereas "A" is interpreted as a symbol for heartbreak and bad luck in love... We all know which one we'd want to be stepping on!

It's said that we won't see another supermoon like this until 2034. I mean, if you miss it, you'll have to wait till 2034.

So why wait?

In the spirit of wishes and superstitions, there is one event coming up where you get to pen your wish (and you don't have to make a crown for this!)

Would you wish to see another supermoon like this in your lifetime? Maybe the Northern lights? Or to spend more time doing activities with the people you love? What will your life wish be?
